SPINAL CORD STIMULATION TO IMPROVE MOTOR FUNCTION IN PEOPLE WITH POST-STROKE HEMIPLEGIA

University of Pittsburgh (Marco Capogrosso & Roberto De freitas)

Project ID: UG3NS123135

Investigators: Marco Capogrosso & Roberto De freitas

Dataset Size: 187.4 MB

Description:

This project proposes to further develop and test the use of cervical epidural spinal cord stimulation (SCS) to improve hand and arm function in individuals following stroke. Activities during the UG3 phase include optimization of the surgical implantation procedures and SCS parameters in 10 participants (Aim 1) as well as benchtop and preclinical work to obtain an IDE for an early feasibility study using a CorTec Brain Interchange System (BIC) based device (Aim 2). A prospective, randomized parallel clinical trial during the UH3 phase with post-stroke hemiparesis patients (N=20) assigned to either the intervention (SCS plus training) or control (training only) arm and measure improvements in motor control, range of motion, and strength (Aim 3).
